Musical Director

We are delighted that Trevor Jones has agreed to be the festival’s Musical Director and Concert Master. Trevor is a highly regarded choral director who brings to his conducting a deep knowledge of the choral repertoire, a strong understanding of teaching vocal technique in the choral rehearsal and a sense of enjoyment and energy for all participants.

Trevor’s solid reputation as one of Australia’s leading Musical Directors has seen him work as both an operatic and symphonic conductor.  In 2011, he was awarded the Brian Stacey Award for Emerging Australian Conductors.

No stranger to the InterVarsity movement, Trevor was conductor of the Monash University Choral Society (MONUCS) from 1999 – 2005, also Musical Director for “CherubFest” in 2017. Trevor Jones is currently a Lecturer in Musical Theatre at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University and is completing a PhD Thesis with the title “Coaching opera singers in the delivery of text and musical style in musical theatre song”.

Professional conducting appointments have included Artistic Director of CitiOpera (Melbourne) and Associate Musical Director and Head of Voice for the Victorian State Schools Spectacular. Operatic repertoire has included La Cenerentola (CitiOpera, November 2015), La Traviata (Opera in The Park, City of Stonnington 2013) and Don Giovanni (The Opera Studio, Melbourne, 2010). Trevor was the Musical Director of the 2016 Melbourne and Perth productions of the musical Avenue Q.

Other engagements have included major musical tours throughout China with leading international performers including Lisa Vroman, Brad Little and Doug LaBrecque as well as performances of Dogfight (Doorstep Arts), 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Vic Theatre Company), Next To Normal (Doorstep Arts), Titanic the Musical (Ballarat) and Dear World (Magnormous Productions).

He founded the chamber choir Choristry in 2008 and was their Artistic Director and conductor until 2014. Trevor was also the Deputy Artistic Director of the Australian Boys Choir from 1999 until 2003 and conducted the Monash University Choral Society from 1999 until 2005. In 2014 and 2017, Trevor was the musical director and primary arranger for Twisted Broadway, featuring many of Australia’s leading musical theatre performers in a fundraising concert for the Victorian AIDS Council. In 2018 he collaborated with Camerata – Brisbane’s Chamber Orchestra for Coupling – a concert featuring new arrangements of well-known love-songs for same-sex couples.

Trevor is highly sought after as an accompanist. He accompanied soprano Annalisa Kerrigan in a national tour of Mario Lanza: A Night to Remember in 2010 and has accompanied acclaimed cabaret artiste Meow Meow on several occasions. He has performed to great acclaim in cabaret venues and festivals around Australia including the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Downstairs at the Maj (Perth), Chapel off Chapel (Melbourne), The Butterfly Club (Melbourne), La Boheme (Adelaide) and Slide (Sydney) Trevor’s performances bring a unique blend of humour, story-telling and song.
