The very first Australian Intervarsity Choral Festival took place in 1950 when the Sydney University Musical Society (SUMS) and Melbourne University Choral Society (MUCS) joined forces to put on a combined concert.
The phenomenon of a massed choir was an immediate success, and ever since, university choirs across Australia have taken turns to host annual festivals in each state. This has happened no less than 70 times since then, the latest being Adelaide in January 2019.
The Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast have been Camp locations for Queensland since 1952, with Brisbane being the performance venue for those Festivals. The Queensland University Musical Society (QUMS) has usually been the host for past events, but 2020 will see a wider participation from other Queensland University choirs.
Not that you have to be a member of a university choir to participate, mind – the Festival is open to all, and bestows a temporary Uni-choir membership/affiliation to those who are not already affiliated with a Uni-choir or Music Society. There are no auditions, and no pressure; it is a relaxed, safe and fun environment in which to indulge in some great music.
Some experience in singing and reading music would be beneficial, but is not essential, as we all start out note-bashing together and develop our skills throughout the series of rehearsals that take place during Camp
Our goal is to provide you with a wonderful experience, the memories of which you will treasure, having been part of an incredible Concert Performance, and had ten of the best days of your life work-shopping great music, meeting wonderful people and making friends from all walks of life.
